The Public Safety Call-Taker position offers a competitive annual salary between $43,114.03 and $57,199.17. This is a full-time role with excellent benefits. Expect to work in a busy, round-the-clock emergency operations center, where shift work, weekends, and holidays may be required.
Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED, the ability to type at least 40 words per minute, and pass a required examination. Strong communication, quick decision-making skills, and adaptability are critical for success in this role.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
This job is vital for public safety. You will answer, evaluate, and prioritize 911 and non-emergency calls across multiple phone lines. Interviewing callers efficiently is a key duty.
Call-takers must accurately enter information into computer-aided dispatch (CAD) systems, maintain written records, and use various databases to check vehicle registrations, licenses, and criminal histories.
Coordination with law enforcement, emergency responders, and the public is frequent. Sometimes, you may be required to read maps or direct callers during stressful emergency situations.
Additional duties may include in-person support for visitors or helping dispatchers during peak demand. Emotional control and multitasking are necessary every shift.
